Twenty years after becoming a Wait, Richard Gardiner, Gent., was given a commission as a Lieutenant in the "Royal Northern Regiment of the Militia in the County of Lincoln". His commission was bestowed on him by none other than the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire - "Brownlow, Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven, Marquis and Earl of Lindsey". The wording of his commission makes it clear that Gardiner is in charge of morale, order and discipline of the Militia and all his "inferior officers [junior officers?]" (MISC DEP 211).
